🐾 Traveling to Hawai‘i with Pets: Tips from a Fellow Kahu (Guardian)

When we relocated to the Big Island in August of 2018, one of our biggest concerns wasn’t the logistics of moving—it was making sure our kitty, Mylo, would be safe, calm, and cared for during the journey.

If you’re planning to bring your pets to Hawai‘i, you already know how overwhelming the process can be:

✔️ Vaccination deadlines

✔️ Stressful Titer tests

✔️ Cargo vs. cabin decisions

✔️ Emotional goodbyes and hopeful hellos

We made it through—and Mylo was a champ. But we learned a lot and now we love helping other pet families avoid the stress. Here's what we always recommend:

✈️ If Your Pet Is Flying In-Cabin:

Cover the carrier with a lightweight towel or blanket to reduce visual stress from airport activity.

Request a private TSA screening room. Pets have been lost at airports during inspections—this step matters.

Use natural calming aids like Rescue Remedy, certified safe essential oils and calming collars. we used these for Mylo and they helped immensely.

🧘‍♀️ If Your Pet Is Flying Cargo:

While calming tools aren’t allowed in cargo, there are safe, natural options to help prepare your pet beforehand.

Tammy is certified in animal-safe essential oil usage through a Doterra program led by a veterinarian. She doesn't sell the products—but wants to share what’s worked for us and for many of out clients. Let us know if you’d like a personalized, safe protocol for your fur baby.

🌺 What It Means to Be a Kahu

In the Hawaiian language, kahu (KAH-hoo) means “guardian” or “caretaker.” It reflects a sacred responsibility—not just ownership, but devoted care for the well-being of another life. That’s what we are to our animals. We are kahu.
